About this game

Mortal Kombat II for DOS is a standout exception to the generally poor quality of early DOS ports. While many DOS versions of popular arcade games were plagued by clunky controls, poor graphics, and missing features, the DOS port of Mortal Kombat II managed to capture much of the essence of the arcade classic. It remains one of the better fighting game ports for the platform, offering a surprisingly faithful experience for PC gamers in the mid-1990s. Gameplay: The DOS version of Mortal Kombat II retains the core gameplay that made the arcade original a hit. Players choose from a roster of iconic fighters, each with their own unique moves, special attacks, and, of course, Fatalities. The combat system is straightforward but deep, with a mix of punches, kicks, and special moves that require precise timing and inputs. The game also introduces Friendships and Babalities, adding a layer of humor to the otherwise brutal fights. Graphics: While the DOS version doesn’t quite match the arcade’s crisp visuals, it does an admirable job of replicating the gritty, digitized sprites and dark, atmospheric backgrounds. The characters are recognizable, and the animations are smooth for the time. The iconic stages, such as the Pit and the Dead Pool, are faithfully recreated, though with some graphical compromises due to hardware limitations. Sound: The sound design is another area where the DOS port shines. The game features digitized voice clips, including the famous "Finish Him!" and "FATALITY!" lines, as well as the grunts and screams during combat. The music, while not as robust as the arcade version, still captures the ominous and intense tone of the original. Controls: The controls are responsive and well-adapted for a keyboard, though they can feel a bit awkward compared to the arcade joystick. Players can customize the key bindings to suit their preferences, which helps mitigate some of the inherent limitations of using a keyboard for a fighting game. For the best experience, using a joystick or gamepad is recommended. Features: Full Roster: The DOS version includes all the original characters, such as Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, and Kitana. Fatalities and More: The game retains the brutal Fatalities, as well as the humorous Friendships and Babalities. Versus Mode: Players can battle against each other in two-player mode, making it a great party game for retro gaming enthusiasts.
