Chasm: The Rift
About this game
This surprisingly good 3D shooting game (the demo is downloadable here) is, in terms of technical things like graphics, somewhere between DOOM and Quake. Unlike most other 3D copycat-style games of this time period, this game actually plays quite decently.Chasm: The Rift is a first-person shooter (FPS) game released in 1997 for MS-DOS, developed by Action Forms and published by Buka Entertainment. It is notable for its use of advanced 3D graphics for its time and its mix of traditional FPS elements with a unique fantasy setting. The game blends action, puzzle-solving, and exploration with a distinct style of combat and environment design.First-Person Shooter (FPS) Action: The primary gameplay is that of a first-person shooter where players navigate through different environments and combat enemies using a variety of weapons. Players will encounter various weapons, including guns and magical items, which they can use to fight the various monsters and creatures within the levels. Levels and Exploration: Chasm: The Rift offers a series of levels that the player must explore, solving environmental puzzles, fighting enemies, and uncovering hidden secrets. The game uses multiple settings, often combining both sci-fi and medieval fantasy elements. Each level presents different challenges, including maze-like environments, traps, and intricate designs that require the player to pay attention to their surroundings. Combat: The game features standard FPS combat mechanics, where players can shoot enemies with guns or use melee combat when needed. There are various types of enemies, ranging from simple creatures to more complex bosses. The enemy AI varies depending on the creature, requiring different tactics for different foes. Health and Ammo Management: Like many shooters from the time, players must manage their health and ammunition carefully. Health can be restored through pickups scattered throughout the levels, and ammo is limited, requiring players to use their weapons wisely. Time Rift and World-Hopping: The central premise of the game revolves around the titular "rift," which transports the player through different worlds. These worlds have different themes (such as futuristic cities or ancient temples), each with its own set of challenges and enemies.
