Captain Comic
About this game
One of my first experiences with shareware way back a couple of months before wed even purchased our old 2400baud modem ... Anyways, this game was quite innovative back when it was released, with its smooth scrolling EGA graphics and sound effects. (This was 1989, of course.) Its still a pretty cool game; the enemies and locations are memorable, as is the music.Captain Comic is a DOS platformer game released in 1990, developed and published by Michael A. Berlyn. It’s a fun, colorful side-scrolling action game that combines exploration, puzzle-solving, and platforming. The game features Captain Comic, a quirky hero who must retrieve stolen treasures across several different worlds while navigating tricky obstacles and fighting enemies. Gameplay Mechanics: Objective: In Captain Comic, the player controls the titular hero, Captain Comic, whose mission is to recover stolen treasures that have been scattered across various levels. These treasures include valuable artifacts, and collecting them is key to completing the game. Players must guide Captain Comic through various worlds, avoiding traps and enemies while solving puzzles to access new areas and find hidden treasures. Controls: Keyboard: The game is controlled using the keyboard, where the player moves Captain Comic left or right, jumps, and shoots. The typical keys involve using arrow keys for movement and the space bar for jumping or shooting. Jumping and Shooting: Captain Comic can jump over platforms and obstacles, while his blaster allows him to shoot enemies. It’s important to time jumps and attacks to navigate the levels effectively. Gameplay Style: Platforming: As a traditional platformer, the game focuses heavily on jumping, dodging obstacles, and collecting items. The levels feature platforms that require precise jumps to reach higher areas or avoid dangerous pitfalls. Exploration and Puzzle Solving: Along with navigating the levels, Captain Comic needs to find hidden items or keys to progress through locked doors and uncover treasures. Puzzles are usually straightforward and require exploring different paths to unlock new areas. Enemies and Obstacles: Captain Comic faces various enemies, such as alien creatures, robots, and environmental hazards like spikes. Shooting or avoiding these enemies is key to progressing through the game. Power-ups: Along the way, Captain Comic can collect power-ups like special items that enhance his jumping ability or blaster power, which can make it easier to defeat stronger enemies.
